How Cookies Helped Raise Awareness About Flavored Nicotine
My name is Billy Haskey. I’m a junior at Newcomb High School, and this is my third year as a member of Evolvement. I’m proud to be part of this movement and to support the fight against youth nicotine use.
Back in May, during lunch in the Commons area at Newcomb High School, we held a No Minor Sale event to celebrate National Chocolate Chip Day. I thought this event would be a fun way to show that cookies are better than cookie flavored vapes. I was excited to see it come to life. With the help of Calvina – another Evolvement youth advocate – and Ms. Hill – my advisor – we collected support cards from students and staff to raise awareness about flavored nicotine products and how they are marketed to youth.
We handed out homemade cookies, Chips Ahoy, and mini cookie packs as well as Berry Barrel Juice. In exchange, people completed support cards sharing their opinions on why it's important to protect minors from flavored nicotine products, like chew, vapes, and cigars. The goal was to educate and start conversations about how these products are harming our communities – especially here in New Mexico.
This issue is personal for me. I have family members who use nicotine products like mint-flavored vapes. Seeing them struggle with addiction has been difficult. It hurts to watch people you love become more and more dependent on something that’s harming them. That’s why I’m so committed to this cause.
Being a part of Evolvement has shown me that even small actions, like hosting an event or asking someone to fill out a support card, can be part of the solution. As I head into my senior year, I plan to stay involved and continue supporting No Minor Sale. We need to keep working to prevent youth addiction and push back against the companies that target us with these dangerous products. This cookie event was just one step, and there will be many more opportunities to make a difference.
